Johnny English

• The Johnny English title sequence had text which comes onto the screen for a certain amount of time, long enough for the audience to read it and then it moves to the side as it is running of the screen. I think this suits the genre of the film really well, in my opinion it could resembles chasing after someone, speed and action.

James Bond - Quantum Of Solace

• In the title sequence for Quantum Of Solace the text comes up which relate to the type of film, each letter moves slowly yet swiftly, not all the letters come up at once some pop up before overs which make it kind of look like codes and riddles. This reflects on the film.

Mission Impossible

• When the text in the opening title sequence comes up for Mission Impossible it has the text running through the background and also text in front coming towards you. The behind text seems like it is running away some how and represents the action and the text in front seems like its coming towards you like its going to get you, it also seems like it is closing in on itself.

Johnny English

Our group have chosen to analyse the title sequence to Johnny English due to the film being in the same genre as our film we have created.


At the beginning of the title sequence for Johnny English we see a number of split screens informing us on a variety of things. We are introduced to the protagonist in this title sequence, we find out that in the film the protagonist is actually Johnny English himself and we find out who he is. We find out that the actor we see is not just an actor playing a role in the title sequence we find out that he is actually the protagonist, we find this out on the very first clip for example in the split screen we see an image of Johnny English and we see text next to it saying ‘passenger: English j. seat 6a, window allocated’ from this we can work out who Johnny English actually is.

Throughout the whole sequence every person is in silhouettes apart from the main protagonist and I think this gives us an introduction on who the main character is. We can also see that maybe London isn’t the only place he goes; maybe he travels many other places too.

In the next clip we see the actor being introduced, we see him walking out of fire, we see a silhouette of a hand holding a gun and finally we see ‘destination: London’. These clips give away many things. In my opinion the protagonist walking out of the fire is meant to be humorous, because I think it is meant to be a copy of James Bond, it is humorous because the actor is a very comedic guy and the fact he is copying the role of James Bond and perhaps pretending to be him is funny as it is not something you would have seen before. In my opinion the fire he is coming out of and the hand and gun silhouette is there to connote danger and action which could be coming up in the film. The ‘Destination: London’ shows us the setting and where the film is going to be set, this is not the only thing that shows or tells us that it is set in London there are also other things we see too we will see later on in the title sequence.

 In this title sequence during the split screens we see lots of thing which we will probably see in the film for example we see a target, this probably connotes danger and actions as well as the guns the protagonist seems to be holding, the fire blazing all over the background and also the fact he shoots a whole in the casino chip.

In one clip we see an aeroplane taking off, this shows and resembles the places maybe he will visit and the places this film is set. In one part of many of these clips we see a silhouette of a woman, this maybe shows us his personality, maybe in this film he is the typical spy who gets seduced by all the women, this could also be copying James Bond. By using the women it brings in the male gaze and possibly attracts more men to the film and title sequence.

We see England on a globe map then it pans in to a typical British black taxi and a typical British big red bus, all of these things certainly give away that the film is made and set in London, England. A target is aimed at the Taxi which the protagonist and this maybe connote the danger and risks Johnny English will be getting into. We then see a glance of him in the taxi with him with his legs crossed in a humorous position; this is to create a comedic scene within the sequence.

The last clip we see are circles round the car as if he is being tracked down this may show in the film he is getting chased with many people after him.

The music is very fast paced and reminds me very much of a spy and so it gives off that the genre is maybe an action movie but joined with the clips we notice it is in fact an action comedy. The protagonist is dressed in a suit and this is the only thing we see him dressed in, to me this is a typical spy, James Bond thing to do so that’s another point that this film is slightly bouncing off of James Bond although in a comedic way.

Juno

Juno

Juno holds a sense of comedy, drama and romance. The title sequence for Juno holds a massive sense of childhood because the whole sequence looks like a children’s colouring book. I get a feel of childhood in the sequence from the very beginning, the grass has been designed to look as if it is coloured in and this instantly took me to think about a child’s colouring book. Then we see the houses made from graph paper, this made me think of maths lessons and school and it gives us a hint of the main character maybe she’s young enough to have to go to school. The text which tells us the director and actors are in bubble writing, this also gives a sense of doodling in school when you’re bored and this also resembles the main character being young. The only character we see is the main character in the film and we see her drinking Sunny D, this to me is a children’s drink and this also gets me thinking about the character and her age. As the main character walks we see he walks past a shop with a bold ‘sale’ sign in the window, under the sale sign is a bunch of tiny baby clothes. This gradually brings the sequence together and it shows even though she young the situation is she is pregnant. Now I see this and the story line is slightly hinted more things are brought to my attention for example the only other people we see in this title sequence are the boys running in the park and this resembles the father of the baby being one of them boys.

We can tell a few things from what she is wearing, we can see that the film was set a couple of years ago due to her fashion, the red jumper and the jeans and the really short shorts the boys are wearing whilst they run. The Character is wearing plenty of layers this may resemble her trying her hardest to try and hide her belly or her pregnancy. As the character walks through the park this part slightly resembles little red riding hood because she’s wearing the red jumper walking through the woods, this creates a sense of childhood and being young, it also connotes innocence.

In this title sequence we can see many things, we can see where the film is set, we can tell the film is set in an American suburb because we see her walking through everywhere. We can also tell its set in autumn because of all the leaves which have fallen to the floor.

At the very end when she reaches her destination the words ‘drugs’ pop up on the wall and this could show her need and desperation for an abortion.

The sequence starts normal and then goes into cartoon and when the sequence finishes it turns back into normal, this may represent that when she is walking she’s in her own daydream and that’s she’s still young in her own little imagination, this also back up her age and her innocence.

This whole sequence hints the story line and it fills you in on what’s about to happen and what your about to see in the film.

Zombie land.

Opening sequence to zombie land.

My first thoughts of this opening scene is that this film is going to be mainly aimed towards men, I also picked up on the fact that it was a comedy as the voice over was being very humorous.

The first thing we see was the American flag and this easily shows were the film is set but the fact the camera is turned upside down could resemble everyone’s worlds being turned upside down. We see a hand held camera being used straight away and this also very easily resembles the film being based on one person’s journey and perspective of what is happening, it also shows some sort of scared and worried feelings, in some ways it resembles peoples emotion. Then we see a zombie jump out of the camera and chase the person with the hand held camera, we also see the zombie eat the person with the hand held camera. In my opinion this bring you in to the film it makes you feel like you are the person running away and this matches the man in the voice over who we will hear give you instructions and rules, this sort of seems like you are going through this experience in the movie.

The voice over which is giving you instructions is very humorous such as ‘poor fat bastard’ and also ‘this lady could've avoided being a human happy meal’ this shows straight away that the film is going to be a comedy. The commentary lets you understand what going on; it gives you an introduction to what’s happening in the film.

The music we hear in the first part of the opening sequence isn't that loud because we focus more on what happening plus most  noises such as the zombies are louder than the music this emphasises them. They are purposely made louder and we are more aware on what happening because of this, the things which are louder include the zombies, the car crashes and even the guns shots. The music changes when the credits start rolling in, it turns into to a very rocky, edgy sounds this represents action. It is also a very masculine sound in my opinion.

Going on to the credits we see a number of scenes put together, in these sense which are very manly, this shows to me that this film is probably a very manly film and it is aimed mostly to a male audience. I feel this due to the short clips that include blood squirting out of a zombies mouth, a woman running in slow motion, an explosions, a naked woman running, a car garage, men in suits, a fire station, guns and also cars. These are all what usually appeal to men.

In one of the scenes used I noticed a black mail character getting chased by a white male zombie, this is very stereotypical, this is because black people are often used in a negative light, they are usually represented as cowardly and incompetent.

Another thing about the credits is the font that is used is red and when someone touches it, it very easily falls down, the red connotes blood and this can show the gore which will be shown in this film, the fact that it easily falls down can show the action and fight which will occur in this film.
